Where to plant? Dahlias love sunshine! Choose a spot that gets at least 6-8 hours of sun.
When to plant? Look for soil temps to be around 55-60 degrees.
How to plant? Dig a 6” deep hole, place the tuber horizontally with the eye (sprout) facing up, and cover with moist soil. Wait for sprouts to appear before watering, which may take a few weeks. Have patience! As the season progresses, water more. When plants reach 12” with 3-4 sets of leaves, pinch off the top to encourage branching (more blooms!).
During the growing season: fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer (we use Osmocote Plus) and ensure dahlias get plenty of water, especially during hot spells. Support taller plants with stakes, tomato cages, twine, or Hortonova netting (our method). Experiment to find what works best for your setup!
